Ritchie racks up 12 kills in defeat at Mount Vernon Nazarene

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Jennifer Ritchie led all players with 12 kills Tuesday night, but Goshen College lost a three-set women's volleyball decision to Mount Vernon Nazarene University 25-15, 25-20, 25-22 in a Crossroads League match at Ariel Arena.

Ritchie hit .222 to lead the Maple Leafs and added 15 digs, the most of any GC player except libero Tessa Clark. Elizabeth Breckbill and Haylee Pennington each added 8 winners and Madison Coles contributed a pair of blocks.

Mount Vernon Nazarene (23-8, 10-6) got 10 kills from Ashley Stumperth and 7 from Mary Kate Harmody, who added a match-high 7 blocks and 2 aces. Ellie Ruby led all players with 22 digs and Molly Galaszewski added 12.

The Maple Leafs (8-24, 1-14) actually finished with more kills than their hosts, but Mount Vernon Nazarene netted a 14-point advantage by committing fewer errors, 26-12. The Cougars outblocked the Maple Leafs 9-3.

Paige Brenner led all players with 31 assists for MVNU; Ally Roehr had 21 for Goshen to move her within four of the 2,400 mark for her career. Tessa Clark added a pair of aces for GC.

Goshen won six of the match's first 10 points before a 5-point run on Stumperth's serve swung the pendulum back to the hosts, who finished with 8 of the last 10 points. A 7-1 run gave the Cougars the lead in the second set; Goshen was able to crawl back to within 1 point, but MVNU used three straight blocks to spark a 5-0 run and get to set point.

The third set started with MVNU in front, but Goshen reeled off six consecutive points on Clark's serve to take a 15-14 lead. After ties at every chance from 15 to 19, the Cougars used five straight points to open a 24-21 lead and an Alyssa Harrer kill wrapped up the match.

Goshen hosts Spring Arbor University at 7 p.m. Friday night in the team's home finale. Senior Ally Roehr will be honored before the match as part of Senior Night festivities.
