Goshen comes from behind to top Spring Arbor on Senior Night

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Ally Roehr got the pre-match accolades and Haylee Pennington paced the Goshen College women's volleyball team with 14 kills in a five-set Senior Night win over Spring Arbor University on Saturday at Gunden Gymnasium.

Elizabeth Breckbill, Jennifer Ritchie and Taylor Eash all fired off 11 winners for the Maple Leafs (8-25, 2-14) in their home finale. Goshen came back from a one-set deficit twice, winning 18-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21, 15-12.

Sydney Ritz and Maggie Watson had 12 kills apiece for Spring Arbor (6-20, 0-17), which also got 10 winners from Claudia Ellis and a match-high 28 digs from Paige Porter. Hope Notter led the team with 30 assists and Emily Martin had 19.

Breckbill and Ritchie each had 4 blocks to lead the Maple Leafs, with Taylor Eash adding 3. Shelbey Younts led the team with 25 assists, five more than Roehr, who reached the 2,400-assist plateau in her final home match. Ritchie racked up 22 digs and Tessa Clark contributed 20.

SAU got three Sydney Ritz kills and two Claudia Ellis aces in a 10-1 run to break open the first set, then took four straight points on Ellis' serve to go up 14-12 in the second. Goshen answered by forcing three straight attack errors to tie the score, then used a Breckbill kill to go up 17-16 and never trailed again. Pennington had three winners among the final eight points.

Goshen pulled in front 4-1 to start the third set and pushed the lead out to 12-7 on Younts' ace. That's when Spring Arbor took over with a 6-0 run, then added another three-point spurt to go up 17-13. Goshen traded points until the end of the set, but found itself down a set for a second time.

The fourth set started much like the third, with a 6-6 tie before Goshen used a 6-2 run to take the lead and Spring Arbor went on a 9-2 run to take it back. After trailing 17-14, though, the Maple Leafs reeled off six straight points for a 3-point lead of their own, then won the last four points in a 25-21 win to level the match.

GC pulled ahead early in the fourth, going up 8-5 on the back of a 6-1 run that included two Olivia Koop aces and two Breckbill kills. The teams traded the next four points before SAU took four of the next five to level things at 11.

Eash and Ritchie broke the tie with a block, Breckbill doubled the lead with a winner, and Spring Arbor committed an error, and just like that, Goshen had three match points. After a Watson kill made it 14-12, Ritchie fired off the last kill to put the Maple Leafs in the win column.

Goshen hits the road for its last two matches of the season, visiting Grant County twice to take on Taylor University and Indiana Wesleyan University. The visit to Taylor comes first on Saturday afternoon, when first serve is set for 3 p.m. inside Odle Arena.
