Box Score UPLAND, Ind. — Elizabeth Breckbill peppered the scoresheet with 13 kills Saturday afternoon, hitting a match-high .520 on 25 errorless swings as the Goshen College women's volleyball team lost in three sets to Taylor University inside Odle Arena. TU won 25-19, 25-18, 25-13
Haylee Pennington added 7 kills and Olivia Koop was second on the team with 3 blocks for the Maple Leafs (8-26, 2-15 Crossroads League). Jennifer Ritchie and Tessa Clark led GC with 13 digs apiece.
Taylor (21-15, 10-8) got 12 kills apiece from Ryan Czerniak and Julia Pomerenke, who each recorded winners on more than half of their attempts. Amanda Adams contributed 9 kills and Kacy Bragg put down 6 to go with a team-high 4 blocks and 29 assists.
A trifecta of Trojans got into double figures in digs, led by Samantha Korn with 19 and followed by Nikki Parrett with 13 and Bragg with 11.
Taylor never trailed in the opening set, although Goshen tied the score four times before a 6-0 run made it 17-11. The 6-0 run in the second set came off the opening whistle as Taylor hit .378 through the opening two periods.
The third set was the closest from a score perspective: the Trojans opened a 10-4 lead before GC reeled off four points in a row to get back to 14-12. Another 8-1 run included three kills and a block from Breckbill, but Pennington's winner was the one that had the honor of putting Goshen up 22-21 for its first lead of the match.
After a service error tied the score, another Breckbill winner made the Maple Leaf lead 23-22, but Pomerenke had a kill and a block in the next three points as Taylor finished off the win.
GC hit .056 with 10 kills in the third set to Taylor's .163 with 14 winners.
Goshen will conclude its regular season Wednesday night with a trip to fourth-ranked Indiana Wesleyan. First serve is set for 7 p.m. EST in Luckey Arena.
