Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Graysen Cockerham, Mariah Roe and Janara Flowers each drained 5 field goals Friday night and the Goshen College women's basketball team went into Christmas break on a high note with a 65-50 win over Indiana University Kokomo at Gunden Gymnasium.

Cockerham went 5-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the foul line to lead all scorers for the Maple Leafs, who improve to 7-5. Flowers added 14 points and Roe chipped in 11 on 5-of-6 shooting.

TaNiece Chapman racked up 8 points and 9 rebounds, finishing a bucket and a board shy of a double-double while leading the team with 3 assists. Cockerham had 3 steals to tie for the game high.

IU Kokomo (7-6) was paced by a double-double from Tia Chambers, who posted 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead all players in both categories. The team shot just 38 percent from the floor and 3-for-15 from long range, however, and Goshen finished with a 30-26 advantage on the glass.

The Maple Leafs connected at a 53.3 percent clip from the floor (24-for-45) and went 4-of-9 dialing long distance. Goshen made 13 free throws to IU Kokomo's 7.

Goshen led 15-8 at the quarter, using a 10-0 run to seize control after allowing the opening basket. IU Kokomo shot 3-for-17 from the floor but forced 7 turnovers on defense.

The Maple Leafs' hot shooting continued into the second quarter as the hosts went into the half shooting 56 percent (14-for-25) compared to IUK's 21 percent (6-for-29). Goshen led by a game-high 16 points at the intermission behind 10 points from Flowers.

The Cougars made their run early in the third quarter, connecting on 7 of their first 8 shots to spark an 18-5 run and trim the deficit to 38-35. They would get no closer, though, as a Suzanna Yoder free throw and Claire Rauck's 3-pointer started an 8-0 run to get the lead back to double figures. Sierra Peete scored at the buzzer to make it 46-37 after three periods.

Each team shot better than 50 percent over the final ten minutes, resulting in the lead stabilizing in the 12-to-15 point range. A pair of Logan Kyre free throws in the last minute gave GC its largest lead of the game at 65-48.

"I was really proud of the team for their perseverance over the last few games," said Goshen coach Stephanie Miller. "We've played well but haven't finished well, and tonight, I thought we did a great job responding to IU Kokomo's run in a mature way. We took momentum back at the right time, and then we were able to make big plays and answer everything they were throwing at us down the stretch."

"Tonight we really did a nice job executing the game plan on both ends of the floor," Miller said. "Offensively we wanted to attack them in transition, slash or post feed inside, and not settle for quick 3s without inside touches. Defensively, we threw a new twist into our zone which made it difficult for IUK to get the ball inside, and that frustrated them as they are a post-dominant slashing team."

The defenses combined to force 37 turnovers, with Goshen taking it away 18 times and IU Kokomo 19.

Goshen hits the road after Christmas for a pair of games at the Saint Xavier University Holiday Tournament in Chicago, playing the hosts at 2 p.m. December 28 and Robert Morris University the following day.
