Maple Leafs come within 15.9 seconds of upsetting 21st-ranked Huntington

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Janara Flowers scored 19 points to lead all scorers and TaNiece Chapman posted a double-double for the Goshen College women's basketball team on Wednesday, but Huntington University had the ball last and escaped Platt Arena with a 65-62 win in Crossroads League action.

Keyaira Murff came within one point of a double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds for the Maple Leafs (6-4, 0-2), who scored 27 points in the third quarter to tie the game after holding the Foresters to 8 points in the second stanza. Goshen shot 55 percent (18-for-33) in the second half and 38 percent overall.

The Maple Leaf defense stifled the long-range capabilities of the 21st-ranked Foresters (10-1, 2-0), who hit on 1 of their 13 3-point attempts for a 7 percent figure. Sarah Fryman led the hosts to 18 points on 10-of-10 shooting at the foul line, an area where HU went 18-of-19 for the game. Sam Hammel added 16 points and 7 assists.

Huntington jumped to a 10-0 lead off the opening tip and led 15-6 at the quarter, eventually pulling ahead by as many as 15 points in the second period. The Maple Leafs responded by scoring the last 10 points of the first half and sinking the first two buckets of the third quarter, tying the score at 23 with 8:04 remaining.

The score was tied five times in the third stanza with neither team leading by more than 4 points. Goshen made 9 field goals after combining for 5 in the first half while Huntington shot 8-of-15 to tie the score at 46.

The Foresters scored twice in the opening 75 seconds of the fourth quarter to pull ahead by 4 points, but less than two minutes later, Chapman and Mariah Roe had combined for a 5-0 GC run to put the visitors up 51-50. After two Forester free throws, Chapman and Graysen Cockerham added 5 more points to run the lead out to four.

Unfortunately for Goshen, Huntington had answers of its own. Hammel converted a pair of free throws at the 3:37 mark, then connected on an old-fashioned 3-point play with 2:43 left to put her team up 57-56. Sara Doi's steal and score 25 seconds later made it 61-56 in Huntington's favor.

The Maple Leafs got back on the scoreboard with Alyson Prigge's bucket, then got three stops in a row on defense. Chapman scored to cut the lead to 61-60 with 52 seconds left; after a Huntington turnover, Cockerham went to the rim and scored with 15.9 seconds to play and Goshen had a 62-61 lead.

Huntington called timeout to bring the ball into the forecourt, where Hammel's off-balance shot connected with 5.0 seconds remaining. After a Goshen timeout, the Maple Leafs turned the ball over on the inbounds pass and were forced to foul.

Cockerham's heave from just beyond half-court, a potential game-tying effort, had the appropriate distance but missed to the left.

Goshen will try its luck with another ranked foe on Saturday when NAIA Division II no. 10 Saint Francis visits Gunden Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 3.
