GOSHEN, Ind. — Graysen Cockerham led all scorers with 20 points and paced the Goshen College women's basketball team with 6 rebounds Saturday, but the Maple Leafs came up on the wrong end of a 73-70 decision against 10th-ranked Saint Francis in Gunden Gymnasium.

Janara Flowers scored 11 points and TaNiece Chapman and Keyaira Murff each scored 10 for the Maple Leafs (6-5, 0-3). Mariah Roe led all players with 7 assists in 38 minutes. Murff also tied for the team lead with 6 boards and Cockerham stole the ball 4 times.

Emma Applegate led USF (9-2, 2-1) with 17 points, fronting a five-headed attack of double-figure scorers. Lauren McBryar scored 13 points and matched Applegate's game high with 3 triples, Kara Gerka added 12 points and 8 rebounds, and Savannah Buck and Meleah Leatherman each scored 10.

The Maple Leafs outshot the Cougars 52 percent to 40 percent from the floor, hitting on 26 of their 50 shots while allowing USF to go 21-for-53. Goshen also had an edge, both in percentage and raw numbers, from beyond the 3-point line, but Saint Francis made up for it with a 23-for-29 (79 percent) clip at the foul line.

Neither team led by more than two points in the first quarter, which finished 15-14 to the visitors with 10 of those 15 points coming at the foul line. The Maple Leafs got a 9-0 run in the middle of the third quarter to open a 31-21 lead and led 31-26 at the break.

After Goshen's 6-of-11 shooting in the second, the third quarter was all USF. The Cougars outscored Goshen 26-8 with the help of 10-for-14 shooting and 10 turnovers, finishing the quarter on an 11-0 run to lead 52-39.

The Maple Leafs answered with their best offensive output of the day in the fourth quarter, connecting on 5 of 6 3-pointers and 12 of 15 shots to mount a comeback. Saint Francis led 63-49 with 6:57 to play before Sadre'a Rougeau and Roe each canned triples to cut the deficit almost in half. Roe and Chapman answered a Cougar bucket with scored of their own, making it 65-59 just before the 4-minute mark.

The teams would trade 3-point plays on each of their next two possessions, keeping the margin constant at 71-65 but draining more than two minutes off the clock. Murff scored with 1:09 remaining to bring Goshen within two possessions, but a turnover on the next possession ended thoughts of a comeback with 14 seconds left.

USF set its final score with two McBryar free throws and Flowers sank a 3 at the buzzer.

The Cougars finished with 30 rebounds to Goshen's 25 and forced 23 turnovers while committing 19.

Goshen is now idle as the team breaks for finals before reconvening for two home games leading into Christmas. GC hosts Concordia University of Michigan at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
