Huntington controls third quarter to defeat Maple Leafs

Box Score

The Goshen College women's basketball team won two quarters and tied another, but a convincing third-quarter run by Huntington led the Foresters to a 67-53 win.

Neither team led by more than five in the contest's first 25 minutes, with the biggest Maple Leaf advantage coming after a game-opening basket by Marian Roe and a 3-pointer by Graysen Cockerham. From there, the teams largely traded scores in a first half that saw 11 ties or lead changes. Huntington's largest lead was three, and Goshen led by four on three different occasions, including for the last time on Alyson Prigge's bucket and free throw with 39 seconds left in the half.

Huntington scored a 3-pointer to close the gap to one at the intermission and then outscored the Leafs 22-6 in the third to break the game open. The game remained tight for the third-quarter's first six minutes, with Taniece Chapman's basket at the 4:12 mark cutting a six-point Huntington lead to 40-36, but Huntington went on an 11-0 run to end the quarter up 15. Goshen could get no closer than 13 in the final quarter, on a Cockerham basket with just over a minute remaining.

Roe finished with 15 points to lead the Leafs, including dropping 3-of-5 shots from long distance, and Prigge added 10. Logan Kyre made all six free throws off the bench and finished with 9 points. Chapman pulled down a game-high 8 rebounds as the Leafs gained a convincing 42-25 advantage on the boards. Cockerham had six rebounds and Haley Archibeque added a pair of steals and assists to her five rebounds.

The loss drops the Maple Leafs to 8-19 overall and 1-14 in the Crossroads League. Goshen returns to action Saturday for a 1 p.m. Senior Day contest with the University of St. Francis.
