Box Score 2 PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. — Ben Longacre homered twice Monday, but the Goshen College baseball team lost a doubleheader to Trinity Christian College by 5-1 and 14-7 scores.
The Trolls (8-8) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opener, getting a homer of their own in a 2-run first inning and two doubles as part of a 3-run second. Longacre's leadoff blast in the fourth rounded out the scoring; while the Maple Leafs (7-10) put the leadoff man on base three times between the third and sixth innings, they only scored once.
Clinton Stroble II led Goshen with two of the team's seven hits, but the home run was the only one to go for extra bases. The Trolls, meanwhile, had four extra-base hits and one single: Nick Caplinger and Kade Gorman combined to hold Trinity hitless over the last four innings.
Longacre's second solo shot came in the first inning of game two, staking the Maple Leafs to a 1-0 lead. The Trolls more than answered, though, putting up 14 runs over their first four innings against three Goshen pitchers.
GC's offense had its best inning of the day in the fifth, getting six straight hits including three consecutive doubles to put up 5 runs. Mitchell Wilson drove in a pair in his return to the lineup after two-baggers from Stroble and Tanner Logan. Austin Bontrager added a run-scoring fielder's choice in the seventh to cap the scoring.
Anthony Todaro went 3 for 4 at the plate for the Maple Leafs while Longacre led the team with 2 runs scored and driven in. Right fielder Brandon Riemersma was 4 for 4 with 5 RBI for the Trolls.
Goshen is scheduled to return to the field Friday against Bethel College in a single game starting at 3 p.m., the first of four games slated for the weekend.
