Stroble goes yard in loss to Bluffton

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Clinton Stroble II's second home run of the season set off a car alarm in the Sarge Yoder Field parking lot in the sixth inning on Sunday afternoon, but visiting Bluffton University scored three runs in the eighth inning to take the non-conference game 4-1.

Kyle Staelgraeve retired the first eight batters he faced on the mound for the Maple Leafs (8-16), pitching into the eighth inning while scattering 5 hits and striking out 8.

The Beavers (8-9) got on the board with a pair of singles and two walks in the third inning before Goshen tied the score on Stroble's shot over the left-field scoreboard. Four more singles and a sacrifice bunt accounted for the winning runs two innings later.

Bluffton finished the day with eight hits, all singles, while three of Goshen's six hits went for extra bases. In addition to Stroble's blast, Ben Longacre and Jason Grooms recorded doubles in the first and fifth innings respectively. Longacre led the Maple Leafs with two hits and Jeff Strayer added a pair for Bluffton.

Zane Martin took the pitching win for Bluffton after pitching three innings in relief.

Goshen hosts another non-conference opponent at 2 p.m. Tuesday when Siena Heights University visits for a doubleheader.
