Schofield walks off Taylor as Maple Leafs top #20 team in nation

Box Score

UPLAND, Ind. — Brighton Schofield singled home pinch-runner Chase Hunter in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Goshen College baseball team topped nationally-ranked Taylor University 3-2 Thursday night.

The Maple Leafs (10-17, 4-6 Crossroads League) earned their first win in 23 months over a ranked foe, and did it despite the game being moved to Taylor's home field due to weather concerns. As the originally-scheduled home team, Goshen batted last in each inning.

Kade Gorman turned in another quality start on the mound, going 6 innings with 3 hits and 1 earned run against three strikeouts. Camm Nickell and Colby Malson combined for three innings of hitless relief.

Taylor (24-9, 4-5), the 20th-ranked team in the latest NAIA coaches poll, opened the scoring with two of its three hits in the third inning. A pair of one-out singles followed by a fielding error brought in the first run and moved the trail runner to third, where he would score on a Wyatt Whitman groundout.

Goshen answered in the bottom of the inning, though, following one-out walks to Bailey Owens and Malson. Ben Longacre singled to halve the deficit before Clinton Stroble II added a game-tying groundout.

The Maple Leafs out-hit the Trojans 6-3, loading the bases with two down in the fifth and getting a leadoff double from Mitchell Wilson in the sixth, but would not score again until the ninth inning.

Kody McGuire drew a leadoff walk and yielded his position on the bases to Hunter, who took second base on a sacrifice bunt. After a groundout to the left side of the infield, Schofield pinch-hit for Owens and laced a single down the left-field line to send Goshen home with the win.

The game's 9 hits came from 9 players, although Stroble and Malson were among three men to reach base twice with the aid of walks. Wilson's double was the lone extra-base hit.

The teams are scheduled to meet again on Saturday to conclude their series, with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 1 p.m. at Goshen's Sarge Yoder Field.
