Box Score SPRING ARBOR, Mich. — Colby Malson led the Goshen College baseball team with two hits, but an early 5-0 Spring Arbor University lead stood up for eight innings Tuesday as the Cougars topped the Maple Leafs 9-5 in Crossroads League action at Hank Burbridge Field.
Bobby Garcia and Jordan Daniels each doubled for the Maple Leafs (12-22, 6-10), who scored two runs in the fifth inning and three in the ninth.
Spring Arbor (16-21, 8-8) got three hits apiece from Brant Mast and Vincent Herschberger. Conner Lengerich was 2 for 4 with a walk, triple and home run, driving in 4 runs. Herschberger added a double.
Duncan Patterson posted a quality start for the Cougars, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and striking out 6 batters in 6 innings before Herschberger took the save. Braedon Evans took the loss in 5 1/3 innings for Goshen.
SAU took the lead on Lengerich's homer three batters into the first inning and led 5-0 by the end of the fourth. Garcia's double put the Maple Leafs on the board in the fifth inning and the visitors doubled their tally on a Ben Longacre single one batter later.
After the Cougars added two runs apiece in the sixth and eighth innings, Goshen put together a three-run rally with two outs in the top of the ninth. After singles by Anthony Todaro and Jason Grooms, Daniels uncorked a two-run double, and pinch-runner Evan Creager later scored on a wild pitch.
Goshen hosts Huntington University this weekend for a three-game series, beginning with a single game at 3 p.m. Friday and concluding with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
