Leafs strand tying runs in ninth but stay alive in league tournament

Box Score

UPLAND, Ind. — Colby Malson, Clinton Stroble II, Mitchell Wilson each recorded a pair of hits Saturday, but the Goshen College baseball team lost a 3-1 decision to Marian University in the Crossroads League tournament at Winterholter Field.

Marian used a pair of hits to crack open a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning: a groundout moved two runners into scoring position with two outs. The Knights plated their runs on an infield single that led to a throwing error, taking a 2-0 lead.

The Maple Leafs got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases on Brighton Schofield's leadoff single and a two-out single from Wilson as Stroble was hit by a pitch. Tanner Logan's seeing-eye single found its way to left field to score Schofield and cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Knights added an insurance run in the seventh inning after a throwing error and a Leo Lopez double.

Goshen went to the bullpen in the seventh for Colton Daniel, who faced seven men the rest of the way and recorded seven outs. Unfortunately, GC also went down in order in the seventh and eighth. In the ninth, Schofield walked and Malson singled to bring the winning run to the plate, but it all happened with two outs and the Knights got a strikeout to slam the door.

Kade Gorman pitched 6 2/3 innings for the Maple Leafs, allowing 6 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 4. Chase Dowell pitched a complete game for Marian.

The loss drops Goshen into the losers' bracket of the conference tournament, which means the Maple Leafs must win twice on Monday to stay alive. GC will play Spring Arbor at 10 a.m.; the winner of that game will play again at 7 p.m.
