Taylor pitchers outduel Goshen to wrap up Maple Leafs' 2019 season

Box Score

UPLAND, Ind. — Ben Longacre wrapped up his junior season with a single and a double Tuesday night as Goshen College lost 6-2 to Taylor University in an elimination game in the Crossroads League baseball tournament.

The Trojans (38-17) broke open a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and added three more insurance tallies over the next two innings.

For the second time in the tournament, Colby Malson nearly gave the Maple Leafs the lead: the second baseman launched the first pitch of the game to left-center field, only to watch the left fielder pull it back and save a home run.

After a pair of Maple Leaf singles, Taylor starter Tucker Waddups retired the next 14 batters; at one point, GC starter Camm Nickell matched him by setting down nine men in a row to push the scoreless duel through five frames.

Brighton Schofield opened the sixth inning by drawing a walk, eventually reaching third base with the help of a sacrifice bunt and a balk, but the Maple Leafs were unable to break the ice. Taylor used four singles and a fielding miscue to plate its three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Goshen's two runs came in the eighth after Schofield and pinch-hitter Bailey Owens started the inning by reaching base. Longacre lashed a double into the corner, scoring one and putting two men in scoring position, and Clinton Stroble II added the second run with an RBI groundout.

Malson finished the last 2 2/3 innings in relief for Goshen.

Goshen concludes the season with a 20-29 record. All-conference awards are slated to be announced later this week.
