Box Score 2 HUNTINGTON, Ind. — The Kourtney Crawford era of Goshen College women's volleyball opened Friday with a four-set win over Tennessee Wesleyan and a four-set loss to the University of the Cumberlands at Huntington University's Forester Invitational.
In the opener against Cumberlands, GC fell by a final score of 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 25-14.
The Maple Leafs used a 6-2 run to take their first lead of the match at 13-11 in the second set behind a pair of kills from freshman Olivia Koop, but the Patriots answered with a 5-0 spurt and would not trail for the rest of the set.
The third stanza had a margin of two points or less until GC's 6-1 run put it up 20-16. Kills by Elizabeth Breckbill, Ally Roehr and Haylee Pennington helped seal the set.
Cumberlands never trailed in the fourth set.
Jennifer Ritchie had the season's first double-double, leading the team with 10 kills and 14 assists.
Olivia Koop added 9 winners and 2 aces in her first collegiate match while Elizabeth Breckbill chipped in 8 kills and the only two solo blocks of the match.
The Maple Leafs took the second match by a final score of 25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21. Ritchie had another double-double by the second set, finishing with 12 kills and 15 digs, while Breckbill paced the team with 14 winners.
Courtney Trusty, playing her second college match and first as the libero, led all players with 18 digs: Tessa Clark added 14 and Shelbey Younts contributed 10.
Each team finished with 16 kills in the first set and 51 in the match. In the sixth contest of the day, one that started 97 minutes late, Goshen nearly finished off the Bulldogs (0-2) in three sets after a 7-0 run cut the TWU lead to 24-23 late in the third.
Over the final stanza, TWU finished with 13 kills to Goshen's 9, but the Maple Leafs forced 10 errors to come away with the win. Goshen raced to a 6-1 lead and took the final four points, getting two aces from Younts to seal the match.
Ally Roehr led the team with 32 assists: Younts had 5 aces and Trusty 2.
The two-day, six-team event continues Saturday: Goshen takes on Baker University from Kansas at approximately 3 p.m. and Brescia University from Kentucky at 7.
