Box Score 2 DUNBAR, W.V. — Braedon Evans took a one-hitter into the sixth inning and Kade Gorman gave up 2 hits in 5 innings of work in the nightcap, but the Goshen College baseball team opened its season with a pair of losses Saturday as it fell 6-0 to the University of Pikeville and 4-3 to Concordia University at the Shawnee Sports Complex.
Ben Longacre and Mitchell Wilson finished with three hits apiece for the Maple Leafs, with Longacre stroking the day's only double.
In the opener against Pikeville, the Bears (1-1) struck first, getting a leadoff single from Tyler Menrath in the first inning and taking the lead two batters later after a pair of groundouts and a stolen base.
Longacre laced Goshen's first hit of the season in the top of the inning, but that was all for the Maple Leaf offense against UPike hurler Brady Cappe until the seventh inning. Cappe struck out 11 and allowed two hits and a walk.
Evans matched Cappe stride-for-stride into the sixth inning, resulting in dueling one-hitters through five frames. A Menrath error opened the inning before the Bears struck for two hits and a hit batter, prompting head coach Alex Childers to call the bullpen and opening the floodgates on a 5-run inning.
Evans finished with 5 runs, 3 earned, on 85 pitches in 5-plus innings. He struck out 4 men and did not walk a batter. Toby Fox gave up 2 runs on 2 hits in an inning of work for GC.
Against Concordia, the Cardinals posted an unearned run in the second inning before Goshen scored the next three runs for a 3-1 lead, but CU laughed last with 2 runs in the sixth and 1 in the seventh for its second win of the day.
Longacre and Wilson each went 2-for-3 to pace the Maple Leaf offense with Longacre and Colby Malson driving in runs. Concordia (2-0) finished with 3 hits, all singles, and by 3 different players.
The Maple Leafs (0-2) got their first runs of the season in the third inning after Gage Andrews led off with a walk and Char Reeves singled. A Nate Lange bunt moved both men into scoring position, where pinch-runner Evan Creager promptly scored on a balk and Malson knocked in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
Goshen tacked on an insurance run against the Cardinal bullpen in the fifth inning, getting singles from Lange and Longacre to go up 3-1.
Starting pitcher Gorman left after 5 innings with a 2-hitter intact, but Concordia tied the game in the top of the sixth on two walks, a passed ball and two wild pitches. The Cardinals took the lead in the seventh on a single, a walk and a double steal.
Tyson Kleinfelter took the win for Concordia after throwing 2 innings of perfect relief, striking out 4. Starter Grant Steinborn had allowed 5 hits and 2 runs in his 4 innings of work. Gorman gave up 2 walks and struck out 5 in 5 innings.
Goshen continues its West Virginia weekend on Sunday, playing Concordia again at 2 p.m. before wrapping up the series against Pikeville at 4:30.
