DUNBAR, W.V. — The Goshen College baseball team got back to .500 on the second day of its season Sunday, using a pair of late-game rallies to post comeback wins as the Maple Leafs knocked off Concordia University 8-7 and the University of Pikeville 5-4 at the Shawnee Sports Complex.

Goshen scored twice in the seventh and final inning to top Concordia in the opener and added a pair of runs in the sixth to upend Pikeville in the nightcap. All three schools finished at 2-2 in the weekend three-way series.

Gabe Kermode. Kody McGuire, Peyton Smith and Mitchell Wilson all had two-hit games for the Maple Leafs as part of the doubleheader. Landon Roth and Colby Malson each picked up relief victories on the mound with John Sanocki getting the save in his first appearance at GC.

"It was good to bounce back and salvage the weekend after a pair of losses on Saturday," said head coach Alex Childers. "We played exciting baseball all weekend and every game was close."

The Maple Leafs put up a quick big inning in their first ups of the afternoon as Wilson doubled in Nate Lange and Ben Longacre before Concordia was able to record an out in the top of the first. Reese Whelen launched an RBI double to put Goshen up 3-0, but Concordia got a solo homer in the bottom of the inning and three runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.

Kermode's two-run double set Goshen back in front in the fifth before Kody McGuire singled him home for an insurance run to make the score 6-4. Longacre and Char Reeves each squared up contact back up the middle in an effort to extend the inning, but Concordia shortstop Chris Lowe retired each man to end the inning.

The Cardinals tied the game on a Vann Acker double and a Lowe single in the bottom of the fifth, eventually pulling ahead with an unearned run on a squeeze play one inning later. Malson got the last two outs of the inning to keep the score 7-6 before drawing the second of two bases-loaded walks as GC scored twice in the seventh.

Concordia went down without a hit in the bottom of the inning.

In the nightcap, Goshen scored the first two runs and the final three tallies to wrap up the weekend's split decision. The Leafs again scored in the top of the first, getting back-to-back doubles from Longacre and Wilson before Kermode reached on an error to knock in the second run.

Starting pitcher Colton Daniel, making his first career start after more than 50 appearances out of the bullpen, set down the Bears (4-7) in order in the first. Pikeville got the better of the next two innings, though, scoring four times on four hits for a 4-2 lead through three innings.

Longacre drove in the first run of the comeback in the fifth inning, batting into a double play after walks to McGuire and Nate Lange, while Roth induced a double play to the first batter he faced to start two innings of one-hit relief.

Daniel Camargo pinch-hit and was hit by a pitch to start the sixth inning, setting the table for a Reeves single before Lange doubled both men home to flip the lead.

With Goshen leading 5-4, Sanocki worked a hitless sixth and allowed a one-out single in the seventh before ending the game with a pair of force plays to second base.

Wilson and Lange each finished the day with two doubles while Goshen pitching struck out 5 men. Kyle Staelgraeve started and threw the first 4 innings against Concordia while Toby Fox worked an inning for the second straight day.

The Maple Leafs return to the Midwest for a doubleheader Wednesday at Trinity Christian, set for 1 p.m. EST. Next weekend, the team sets off for its Spring Break trip to the Carolinas, Tennessee and Florida, beginning with a three-game set at Montreat College in North Carolina.
