Chapman leads Goshen in defeat by ranked IWU foe

MARION, Ind. — TaNiece Chapman's 10 points led the Goshen College women's basketball team Saturday in a 75-42 loss to 21st-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University in a Crossroads League matchup at Luckey Arena.

Dayton Groninger scored 24 points to pace the Wildcats (19-7, 10-4), who got 11 points from Adrianna Trexler off the bench and 10 points from Anne Secrest. Secrest also led all players with 9 rebounds and Carly Lange added 5.

Indiana Wesleyan led 19-9 at the end of the first quarter and outscored Goshen 26-10 in the second, shooting 66 percent (19-for-29) in the first half to open a 26-point lead. The Wildcats connected on 6 first-half three-pointers, including their last 5 in a row, and forced 11 Goshen turnovers.

For the contest, IWU clocked in at 52 percent (21-for-54) from the floor and 39 percent (7-for-18) from 3-point range. The Wildcats outrebounded Goshen 33-25 and recorded all three of the game's blocks while guard Madison Davis finished with a game-high 4 steals and 5 assists.

Goshen shot 85 percent (11-for-13) at the foul line but just 31 percent (14-for-45) from the floor, adding 3 three-pointers to the equation. Logan Kyre and Suzanna Yoder each led the team with 2 assists while Keyaira Murff had 4 rebounds and Chapman recorded two steals.

The loss kept Goshen one game behind Spring Arbor University in the race for the eighth and final spot in the Crossroads League tournament, although Goshen still plays the Cougars and Bethel University, the other team tied for ninth place, in the final two weeks of the regular season.

First, though, the Maple Leafs travel to Taylor University on Wednesday evening to take on the Trojans, NAIA Division II's fifth-ranked team. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Odle Arena.
