Baer Snaps Scoring Drought In Draw With Bethel

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Anneliese Baer scored a game-tying goal 3:57 into the second half and the Goshen College women's soccer team held on to earn a 1-1, double-overtime draw with Bethel College Wednesday night in Crossroads League action at the Goshen College Soccer Complex.

Lindsey Seifert scored the Bethel goal 6:30 before the break on a through ball to the top of the penalty area from Grace Smithberger, a pass that Seiffert finished to the far post to snap a five-match scoreless drought.

Baer's tally also came on a through ball, this one from Katelyn Vendrely. Janeth Vela trapped that pass and sent it through to the senior midfielder, who finished for her first goal since Sept. 12. Baer's five goals are second-most on the team, behind the six of Melanie Drinkwater.

The Pilots took 20 shots, led by six from Smithberger, to Goshen's nine. Natalie Thorne made eight saves for the Maple Leafs, who had seven of the match's nine corner kicks. Baer, Seifert and Smithberger were the only players with multiple shots on frame.

Unfortunately, the match did little for either team's chances of making the CL tournament: Goshen improves to 0-5-2 in conference play and 4-11-2 overall, while Bethel is 0-6-1 and 2-13-2. The Maple Leafs close out their regular season on Saturday against Huntington. The 6 p.m. match is also Think Pink Night for breast cancer awareness, with a portion of gate recepts going to the American Cancer Society.

More, including comments from Goshen head coach Scott Gloden, to come when available.
