Volleyball Drops Four-Set Decision In Winona Lake

Box Score

WINONA LAKE, Ind. — The first set was kind to the Goshen College volleyball team Wednesday night in a Crossroads League match at Grace College. The remaining three sets were not as the Maple Leafs lost a 21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-23 decision to their closest geographical conference opponent in the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

The Maple Leafs hit .250 in the first set, posting 14 kills against only four errors as a team to take a one-set advantage. Grace eclipsed that figure by hitting .286 in each of the next two sets, and the Lancers finished the match with 57 kills to Goshen's 47.

Three Goshen players finished in double figures in the kills column: Lexa Magnuson and Whitney Peterson each had 11 followed by Katy Anspach with 10. Natalie Hubby led all players with four blocks and added five kills herself.

"I could just repeat my comments from the last few matches tonight," said Goshen head coach Jim Routhier. "We showed again that we can play with teams that have better records, but the challenge continues to be winning the critical points of each set."

Lisa Rodriguez added 25 assists and Kelsey Smith 18 for the Maple Leafs. Sierra Smith of Grace had a match-high 14 kills.

The Maple Leafs fall to 9-11 this season and 3-9 in Crossroads League play. Goshen takes leave of the conference this weekend with a match at Indiana University South Bend Friday night, followed by a tri-match at Indiana University Northwest on Saturday. The IUSB match begins at 7 p.m. at the Student Activities Center in South Bend and the Titans are hosting Coaches vs. Cancer Night, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.
