Third-Set Runaway Sparks Four-Set Road Win

CHICAGO — A minor adjustment made a major difference Tuesday evening as the Goshen College volleyball team earned a four-set victory at Roosevelt University in Illinois.

After Goshen won the first set and Roosevelt took the second, head coach Jim Routhier asked his team what went wrong. Upon hearing the answer, he replied, "That's an easy fix — we just need to score 25 points before they do." In true coach fashion, Routhier would not identify what the problem was.

But regardless of the solution, it worked. Goshen won the first four points of the third set, then went on runs of six and seven straight points later in the stanza, and carried that momentum into the fourth set for a 25-23, 23-25, 25-7, 25-20 win.

Freshmen Whitney Peterson and Hallie Vanitvelt led the Maple Leafs with 10 kills apiece, followed by nine from senior Katy Anspach. Meghan Gerke picked up four blocks at the net, while Lexa Magnuson added three.

"Volleyball's not rocket science, it's just serving, passing, setting and hitting," said Routhier. "Roosevelt was a scrappy team with a big middle hitter. Once we adjusted, we began to control the tempo of the match."

Goshen (5-1) begins its conference slate Friday evening when it travels to Mishawaka to face Bethel College with first serve at 7 p.m.
