Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Scott Gloden's career college coaching record is perfect.
The first-year head coach's team won its first game of the season Saturday afternoon as Goshen College defeated Cleary University 3-0 in non-conference women's soccer action at the Goshen College Soccer Complex.
The game was scoreless at the half, but that tie didn't last long after the intermission when Gina Berkey cleaned up a loose ball in the right side of the penalty area just 2:11 into the second half. Goshen's next two goals came just 65 seconds apart: Anneliese Baer converted a 62nd-minute penalty, then crossed the ball to Ginyce Haywood after the ensuing kickoff to set up Haywood's first goal in a Maple Leaf uniform.
On the field, the game was less even then the 0-0 halftime score made it look. Goshen took 31 shots to Cleary's six, peppering the frame with a dozen shots on goal. The Maple Leafs had the game's only goal and the majority of the possession as well.
Natalie Thorne made two saves in goal as she recorded the first shutout of her junior season.
Goshen returns to action on Wednesday night when Purdue-Calumet visits the Goshen College Soccer Complex for a 7 p.m. match.
More, including comments from Gloden, to come when available.
