Leafs Need Five Sets But Prevail Over Huntington

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — It took five sets and nearly two hours, but the Goshen College volleyball team got off the schneid Wednesday night in a 25-15, 20-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11 Crossroads League victory over Huntington University at Gunden Gymnasium.

Katy Anspach finished with 12 kills to lead a trio of Maple Leafs who hit double figures: Lexa Magnuson racked up 11 spike winners and Hallie Vanitvelt added 10. Goshen hit .316 in the final set, its best mark of any stanza in the match, and used eight kills against two attack errors in that set to finish off the match.

Goshen (9-8, 3-7 Crossroads League) cruised to a first-set victory, using 14 Forester errors to jump out to 6-2 and 20-11 advantages. But the visitors righted the ship quickly and leveled the match with 18 second-set kills before the Maple Leafs used 17 winners to claim the third stanza.

The fourth set was all Huntington (4-6, 4-6 CL). In contrast to earlier sets in which each team was plagued in efficiency, the Foresters at one point had seven straight points come from kills: they led 13-4 and 19-12 before Goshen closed to within 25-21.

In the deciding set, the pendulum swung back to the hosts: after ties at two, three and four points apiece, a Magnuson kill put Goshen up 6-4, then another made it 7-5 and another 10-7. Natalie Hubby had the privilege of finishing the match, doing so with a kill of her own to end a point in which her sister Emily served for the other side.

Lisa Rodriguez of Goshen led all players with 30 assists and Kate Cobb of Huntington had a match-high 34 digs. The Foresters came out ahead in aces (where Suzanne Grimm had three) and blocks (Ashli Drewes led all players with seven).

Goshen takes a two-match sojourn to Ohio this weekend, playing at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Friday and Bluffton University on Saturday. The Maple Leafs do not return home until Wednesday, Oct. 14, after six matches on the road.
