Leafs Come Up Short In Hitting Onslaught At Marian

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A three-hour road trip proved unkind to the Goshen College volleyball team Friday night as the Maple Leafs dropped a four-set decision to Marian University in Crossroads League action.

Goshen hit a season-high .412 in the first set, with 16 kills against only two errors. Trailing 13-11, kills from Hallie Vanitvelt and Katy Anspach on consecutive points tied the set, and after a Danielle Plank ace put Goshen ahead 14-13, the Maple Leafs never trailed again en route to a 25-20 win.

In the other three sets, it was Marian's turn to hit out the lights: the Knights racked up 18 kills in the second and fourth stanzas, hitting .274 for the match. Marian won the final three sets 25-23, 25-17 and 25-16.

Frannie Stephenson led all players with 25 kills: Goshen was paced in that category by 11 from Lexa Magnuson and 10 from Anspach. The good hitting night was tough on blockers: each team ended only three of the other team's attacks.

Kelsey Smith led Goshen with 16 assists, followed closely by Lisa Rodriguez with 15. Fifteen was also the magic number for Ciana Bonfiglio, who led the team in digs.

Goshen (6-3, 0-2 CL) returns to the floor Wednesday at St. Francis. Marian is 1-1 and starts conference play 1-0.
