Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Kylie Giger led Goshen College with 10 kills and three blocks, but Marian University matched that with three players racking up double-figure kills in a four-set Crossroads League women's volleyball win Wednesday night.
The visiting Knights (16-9, 5-7) won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-19 after taking early leads in both. The third stanza was tied at 15 before Goshen went on an 8-0 run to claim the set 25-19; to almost the opposite effect, Marian used a 9-0 run of its own to take the final set 25-16.
Behind Giger, Christy Swartzendruber and Darienne Maust had seven kills each for Goshen. Whitney Peterson added six and Lexa Magnuson five. Maust and Magnuson each added two blocks while Sydney Cruz contributed three.
Frannie Stephenson of Marian led all players with 12 winners followed by Anne Strevels and Emily Graves with 10 apiece. Graves hit .471 and Strevels .391 as the Knights finished with 57 kills, 17 more than Goshen (10-11, 5-8). Swartzendruber and Giger combined to hit .317, but the rest of the GC team combined for 13 errors against 23 kills.
Marian setter Julie Hoying paced all players with 25 assists while Knight libero Vanessa Lay had 19 digs. Hallie Vanitvelt (18 assists) and Swartzendruber (18 digs) led Goshen in those categories.
The Maple Leafs will take a break from conference play this weekend to play four times in 27 hours at the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament in Fort Wayne. Goshen opens the event by facing host Indiana Tech at 2 p.m. Friday.
