Cougar Winners Spoil Balanced Leaf Attack In Four

Box Score

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A quartet of Goshen College women's volleyball players finished with seven kills Wednesday night, but the other use of the number four was less positive as GC lost in that many sets to the University of Saint Francis in a Crossroads League match.

The host Cougars (8-21, 4-9) came out hot and claimed the first set by a 25-12 margin before pulling out to an 11-3 lead in the second. Goshen won two-thirds of the final 33 points to take the set 25-22 and level the match. But in the third stanza, the momentum shifted back to the hosts, who used a 10-4 run to break the set open and won the match with 25-17 and 25-22 victories.

Meghan Gerke, Kylie Giger, Lexa Magnuson and Whitney Peterson each finished with seven winners for GC (11-15, 5-9), which was held to an .066 hitting percentage by a USF front line that posted nine blocks. Magnuson's seven kills and an error on 13 swings gave her a .462 clip, the lone Leaf to hit better than .100.

Ally Roehr posted 18 assists for the Maple Leafs, one more than Lisa Rodriguez had in her first match since September 2. Christy Swartzendruber led GC with 16 digs while Giger and Peterson had four block each.

Megan Diagostino of USF led all players with 14 kills, followed by Anne Clark with 12 and Becca Pruden who had nine. Chloe Hubner paced the Cougars, who out-killed GC 55-38, with 28 assists. Despite eight Goshen blocks, the hosts hit .195.

Goshen has less than 48 hours to regroup before traveling to Bethel College for another conference match on Wednesday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Goodman Gymnasium in Mishawaka.
