Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Buoyed by six kills in the final set from the hot hand of Christy Swartzendruber, the Goshen College women's volleyball team knocked off local rival Bethel College in four sets Friday evening at BC's Goodman Gymnasium.
The host Pilots (9-18, 5-9) emerged victorious from the opening stanza, using 15 kills to win 25-19, before Goshen won sets two and three by identical 25-20 margins. The Maple Leafs used a 7-0 run to open a 17-8 lead in the final set, eventually leading 21-11 before claiming the match with a 25-16 win.
Swartzendruber finished with 12 kills, including three in a six-point span in the final stanza, finishing with two more than teammate Meghan Gerke. The Maple Leafs (12-15, 6-9) finished with 50 winners to Bethel's 44 and forced their opponents into nearly as many errors (16) as kills (18) over the final two sets.
The victory was Goshen's second over the Pilots this season, just the fourth time that has happened since the schools first met in 1974 and the first since 2009. The win also moved coach Jim Routhier's team into seventh place in the Crossroads League, where there are five teams within a game of each other with either three or four conference matches remaining.
Ally Roehr led Goshen with 22 assists, though Payton Anderson of Bethel led all players in that category with 37—BC used one setter, while Goshen rotated Roehr and Lisa Rodriguez.
For the eighth time this season, the Maple Leafs had fewer blocks than their opponents: Bethel stuffed five attacks while GC ended points with only three, all assists by Gerke and Darienne Maust.
Roehr finished with a match-high three aces, one more than Swartzendruber, who paced GC with 16 digs. Hallie Vanitvelt added eight kills and Lexa Magnuson seven, while Kassandra Williams led Bethel with nine.
Goshen steps out of Crossroads League play for a day on Saturday to host IU South Bend on senior day, where the Maple Leafs will recognize Magnuson and Kylie Giger before the match. First serve is set for 3 p.m. at Gunden Gymnasium.
