Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Meghan Gerke matched her day-old career high with 10 kills and set a new best mark with six blocks, but the Goshen College women's volleyball team lost to IU South Bend in five sets on Senior Day Saturday at Gunden Gymnasium.

Gerke fired three winners in a six-point span during the first set, which the hosts won 25-18 before pulling out to a 6-2 lead in the second. The Titans (14-18, 7-7 Chicagoland) leveled the score at 16 before winning 30-28 in extra points to level the match.

IUSB won the last six points of the third set for a 25-23 win. After Christy Swartzendruber kills gave Goshen two of the last four points for a 25-20 victory in the fourth stanza, IUSB jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the deciding set and won 15-10.

Ashley McClintock and Sierra Conklin racked up 16 kills each for the Titans, while Gerke was followed by Swartzendruber with nine for the Maple Leafs (12-16, 6-9 Crossroads League). Kylie Giger and Hallie Vanitvelt had seven each for GC as well.

The visitors ended the match with a 62-56 edge in the kill department, one that Goshen nearly canceled out with a 12-7 advantage in blocks. Gerke's six stuffs didn't even lead the team, as Giger added two solos and five assists to equal IUSB's entire output.

Over the course of 220 points, the teams finished just two attacks apart with IUSB tallying 183 to Goshen's 181. The Maple Leafs won 112 points and allowed 108 but were out-hit .153 to .133.

One player from each team, McClintock and Danielle Plank, finished with a match-high three aces. Titan setter Leah Wimmer led all players with 48 assists while libero Janelle Rehlander had 23 digs. Plank led GC with 19 in the latter category.

Despite the loss, Goshen did not lose ground in the Crossroads League since it was a non-conference match: the 6-9 Maple Leafs trail Marian by half a game and Huntington and Grace by a full one in the CL standings. Coach Jim Routhier's team returns to league play for its final three matches, beginning with a 7 p.m. home match on Tuesday against Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
