Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Defending national champion Spring Arbor University extended its winning streak against Crossroads League competition to 44 games on Saturday with a 5-0 win over the Goshen College women's soccer team.
The top-ranked Cougars (12-0, 5-0) took seven shots in the first 10 minutes, culminating in the game's first goal from Casandra Besteman after 9:27 elapsed. SAU added insurance goals from Bethany Balcer with 5:18 left in the half and Renee Broekhuizen with 1:49 to play and took a 3-0 lead into the intermission.
Balcer and Broekhuizen each scored again, eight minutes and two seconds apart, in the second half to set the final score. Spring Arbor finished with 31 of the match's 32 shots and 13 of the 15 corners: Broekhuizen took a match-high 11 shots, three more than Balcer.
Natalie Thorne made eight saves in goal for Goshen (6-6-2, 2-2-1) in the loss. Molly Zook made one. Ashley Timmons recorded the shutout for Spring Arbor, which has conceded one goal in its last 1,977 minutes (nearly 22 regulation games).
Goshen has less than 72 hours to regroup before its next match, a visit from Taylor University at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
