Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Four different Goshen College women's soccer players found the back of the net as the Maple Leafs leveled their season record Tuesday night with a 4-0 win over Holy Cross at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
Megan Baumgartner opened the scoring on a pass from Ardys Woodward 165 seconds after the opening whistle. The goal was Baumgartner's first career tally coming in her 18th appearance. Lena Charles scored her first goal of the year 12:02 before halftime after Xenia Isaula knocked the ball away from a scrum in the Holy Cross penalty area.
Goshen (1-1) took 21 of its 30 shots in the second half and scored two more insurance goals in the final four minutes. Mara Beck's first career goal came with 3:43 remaining after an Asia Green pass was deflected to her feet by Janeth Vela. In the final minute Green made the score 4-0 by slotting a rebound to the left of Holy Cross netminder Hayley Deisinger.
Deisinger did everything she could to keep her team in the game with 13 saves, including 11 after halftime. All told, 14 Maple Leafs attempted shots. Natalie Thorne picked up the shutout in goal for GC as the Maple Leaf defense held their opponents (0-1) to five shots.
"The team played really well tonight for long stretches, which is encouraging," said second-year Goshen head coach Scott Gloden. "With that said, the second match of the year is always a work in progress: we still need to do better with our scoring chances, our defensive discipline and our match fitness."
Goshen's attacking mindset was visible throughout the match as the Maple Leafs were called offside 11 times, including four in the first quarter hour. Two of the Saints' five shots came in the opening 20 minutes as well.
Gloden rotated 20 bodies through the 11 spots on the field: only Thorne and two defenders, Charles and Courtney Wengerd, went the distance.
The Maple Leafs wrap up their season-opening three-games-in-five-days stretch Thursday night against Marygrove. Kickoff is again set for 7 p.m. at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
