Box Score WINONA LAKE, Ind. — After a second-set comeback to level the match and an 19-12 third-set lead, the Goshen College women's volleyball team looked to be on track for its third straight conference win on Saturday afternoon at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center. But host Grace had a comeback of its own in mind, taking nine of the next 11 points to win the stanza and eventually the match in four sets.
The opening stanza was tied nine times, including at 20, 21, 23 and 24, before Grace finished off the set with a 26-24 win. The second started out less even as the Lancers won five straight points, but almost as quickly Goshen closed back to 5-4. In that case, Goshen won the final four points, too, to level the match with a 26-24 set win. The visitors hit .226 and the hosts .280 in the third, which Grace won 27-25, before the Lancers carried that momentum to a 25-15 fourth-set win and claimed the match as well.
Kelsee Zuidema and Sierra Smith led the Lancers (6-7, 1-3 Crossroads League) with 18 kills each. Tori Bontrager added 11 of her own, so Grace's top three spikers accounted for 47 of the team's 65 winners. Whitney Peterson posted 11 kills and Lexa Magnuson nine for Goshen (6-5, 2-2), which had eight fewer attack errors than Grace on 19 fewer tries.
Bontrager led all players with five block assists. Grace stonewalled eight points at the net, one more than its guest. Ally Roehr paced Goshen with 21 assists, while the Maple Leafs were led defensively by Meghan Manley (17 digs) and MacKinnon Tracy (12).
Before returning to conference action by hosting Bethel on Friday, Goshen plays a non-conference match at Anderson on 7 p.m. Tuesday.
More, including comments from Goshen head coach Jim Routhier, to come when available.
