Box Score ANDERSON, Ind. — Goshen College swept Anderson University 25-17, 25-21, 25-23 in non-conference women's college volleyball Tuesday night at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium on the AU campus.
Hallie Vanitvelt finished with nine kills while Kylie Giger had eight for Goshen (7-5). The visitors hit .171 for the night and forced their opponents into more attack errors than winners in the opening stanza, one in which the Maple Leafs turned a 10-10 tie into a 14-10 lead and cruised from there to the win. The visitors also took 3-0 and 13-9 leads in the second set and led 23-21 before Vanitvelt pounded two spikes to take a 2-0 match lead.
The third set was even closer, with the teams pulling all square at 15 different points from 1-1 to 23-23. Each team posted its highest hitting percentage of the match in that stanza, with Goshen firing at a .279 clip (17 kills on 43 tries) and Anderson (3-6) hitting .178 with 14 winners.
Ally Roehr had 34 assists for Goshen, with NCAA substitution regulations prompting the Maple Leafs to use one setter rather than the usual two. Roehr out-set the entire Raven team, which finished with 33 assists on 34 kills. Roehr, Danielle Plank and MacKinnon Tracy each had two service aces to tie for the lead among all players.
Goshen won seven points on blocks at the net. Hallie Vanitvelt posted the team's lone solo block while Giger added three assists. The Maple Leafs also kept countless points alive on defense with 63 digs, paced by 16 from Christy Swartzendruber.
"We did a tremendous job on defense and we won pretty much all of the long volleys," Routhier said. "The team did a great job adjusting to the change in our lineup without Whitney (Peterson). A lot of different players stepped up and produced."
The Ravens were led by 10 kills from Emily Hale, 23 assists from Riley Troyer-Anderson, and three blocks by Hannah O'Brien.
The win came in the 900th match of Goshen coach Jim Routhier's coaching career: the head coach sports a 588-312 record in his 30th season overall, counting 22 years at Concord High School and eight at GC. Routhier's former pupil was on the other sideline, as 1988 Concord graduate Tami Miller was coaching her 409th match in 14 seasons at AU. Both Routhier and Miller are members of the Concord athletic hall of fame.
Goshen returns to Crossroads League action Friday, when it hosts local rival Bethel College in the first of nine consecutive CL matches. First serve in Gunden Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.
More, including comments from Routhier, to come when available.
