Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Lexa Magnuson posted 14 kills and Christy Swartzendruber had 11 as the Goshen College volleyball team knocked off Roosevelt University in five sets Friday night at Gunden Gymnasium.
While the match was close, several sets were decided early: Goshen led 10-3 in the first stanza, 12-2 in the fourth and 8-1 in the decider en route to a 25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-5 victory.
Darienne Maust added eight blocks, including three solos, for the Maple Leafs (4-4, 0-1). Hallie Vanitvelt has six kills while Maust, Kylie Giger and Whitney Peterson had five each. Goshen hit .455 in the final set, .348 in the sets they won, and .221 for the day.
Brooke Lee had 19 kills for Roosevelt (2-5). Abby Petroelje added 16 on 47 tries. The Lakers nearly matched Goshen's kill totals, 52 to 48, but had a dozen more attack errors and 13 service errors.
"I think this was the first match we've played where we really controlled the net," said Goshen coach Jim Routhier. "Our defense made some fantastic digs to keep the ball alive and then the offense would put it away. The players are beginning to gel together and play more as a team. Roosevelt had two very strong hitters and we knew we had to stop or at least make them change their attack. We did that. I am very happy with how our young players are beginning to step up and our seniors, Lexa and Kylie, are a big help for stability."
Lisa Rodriguez paced Goshen with 28 assists, three short of Roosevelt's Natalie Saunders for the match high despite the fact that the Maple Leafs used two setters rather than one. On defense, Danielle Plank had 12 digs to lead GC: Ally Roehr, Swartzendruber and MacKinnon Tracy added 10 or more each.
Goshen returns to Crossroads League play on Wednesday with an 8 p.m. home match against Saint Francis before embarking on a three-match, five-day road trip to Huntington, Grace and Anderson.
