Goshen Volleyball Downed By Taylor Attacks

Box Score

UPLAND, Ind. — Taylor University used 17 first-set kills and a .224 hitting percentage to post a three-set women's volleyball victory over Goshen College on Saturday afternoon at Odle Arena.

Christy Swartzendruber chipped in six winners and Lexa Magnuson five for the visitors, but Goshen fell behind early in the match and finished on the wrong end of a 25-6, 25-18, 25-20 defeat.

The host Trojans (9-8, 6-3 Crossroads League) used 17 kills, an ace and three blocks to take the opening stanza. In the second, Goshen won the first two points, then rebounded from an 11-7 deficit to lead 15-14 and 16-15. But TU went on another attacking spree and a 10-2 run, with three winners from Kelly Arnold and two from Rachel Bouma, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Taylor jumped out to a 6-2 edge in the final set, and while Goshen closed within two points at 9-7, the Maple Leafs (9-7, 4-4) never got closer.

Despite Taylor's field day hitting the ball, that success didn't carry over to exorbitant blocking figures from the same front-row players. Each team won four points at the net from one solo and three assisted blocks apiece. Magnuson, Lindsey McQuinn and Kylie Giger were each part of two blocks for Goshen.

The Trojans racked up 47 winners on the day, paced by 13 each from Becca Gerig and Kelly Arnold. Haley Harrell added 38 assists and Samantha Korn was the only player with multiple aces.

Ally Roehr added an ace for Goshen to go with a team-high 14 assists. Swartzendruber led Goshen with 11 digs.

The end of play on Saturday brought the Crossroads League schedule to its theoretical midpoint: in reality, Goshen still has yet to play Mount Vernon Nazarene for the first time, but eight of the 10 league schools have played nine of their 18 conference matches. Goshen currently sits alone in fifth place at 4-4 in the CL, with four of the 10 sides separated by a single game from fourth through seventh.

The Maple Leafs return to the court on Wednesday for the second half of their season series with Huntington before visiting Ohio to play Mount Vernon Nazarene for the first time on Friday. First serve for the Goshen-Huntington match is 6 p.m. Wednesday in Gunden Gymnasium.
