WINONA LAKE, Ind. — Katie Baer came one save shy of matching a career high with 14 saves between the sticks, but the Goshen College offense struggled to find an opportunity to back her up on Saturday in a 1-0 loss at Grace College's 1st Source Bank Field.
The Lancers (7-7-4, 4-4-1 Crossroads League) capped their regular season with a 29-shot performance, putting 15 of the attempts on frame. Grace tested Baer early with five shots in the first six minutes: one was blocked and another sailed wide with the remaining three carrying all the way to the netminder.
Two of Goshen's captains, Lena Charles and Megan Bower, took first-half shots for the Maple Leafs (3-12-2, 0-8-1) in the 12th and 25th minutes, respectively. Both attempts sailed wide, however. Despite a total of 18 shots, nine free kicks and two corner kicks, neither team dented the scoreboard in the first half.
Grace's goal came after Baer had added another save to start the second half in addition to getting a ricochet off the crossbar. Allison Vroon followed up her shot off the woodwork and put away the rebound with 34:31 remaining.
Eighty-three seconds after the strike, Baer etched her name into the Maple Leaf record book: her 12th save of the night was her 127th of the season, matching the 10th-highest total in Maple Leaf history. She got the spot to herself with another save eight minutes later and finished the season with 128, which is also the 10th-most for a career.
Junior Allison Ebersole and sophomore Londyn Feasel each capped their first seasons at Goshen with a shot on goal in the second half: Lancer goalie Abby Schue made both saves in posting the shutout.
Grace finished the day with a 29-4 edge in shots and four of the match's five corner kicks while the Maple Leafs turned in a 12-8 lead in free kicks. Vroon led all players with six shots and four on target.
The loss ensured that Goshen would finish the season as the 10th-place team in the Crossroads League and miss its chance at a second straight conference tournament. All-conference awards are set to be announced following the conference tournament.
