Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. — Sydney Stein came a point and a rebound away from a double-double, but the Goshen College women's basketball team couldn't keep the momentum going after a late first-quarter run and dropped a 72-52 decision to NAIA Division II 22nd-ranked Siena Heights University on Friday in the opening round of the SHU Thanksgiving Classic.
The two teams came out of the locker room hotter than leftover turkey from a hyperactive microwave, combining to knock down 20 of their 30 field-goal attempts in the opening 10 minutes as Siena Heights (2-5) led 31-21 at the quarter. Not unlike those leftovers, however, the shooting numbers cooled off considerably and quickly: SHU shot 36 percent and Goshen (1-8) converted at 24 percent the rest of the way.
The Saints would seize further control of the game with a 13-3 run to open the second quarter, opening a 44-28 edge at halftime and pushing that lead out to as many as 26 in the third quarter.
Stein led all Goshen players with four field goals and cleaned the offensive glass a game-high five times. Mariah Roe added nine points to match Stein's team high; Roe and Donnae Lipinski, who added seven points off the bench, each dropped in three field goals. Carley O'Neal matched Stein with a team-high two assists.
Siena Heights got a game-high 14 points off the bench from Alyssa Larson while Addyson Tomczak used three 3-pointers to finish with 11 points. Tomczak was the only player on either team to hit more than once from long range as the teams combined for a 30.6 percent (11-for-36) clip beyond the arc.
Taylar McNeal paced SHU with five rebounds; outside of each team's leader, no other player corralled more than four, but five Saints and three Maple Leafs reached that mark. Keyaira Murff got to a different kind of four for Goshen, accounting for half of the game's eight blocks. Azalea Miller's five dimes for the home side led all players.
All four teams in the classic will return to the floor for the second day of the Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday. Goshen will take on IU Northwest, which dropped a 90-58 decision to Pikeville earlier Friday, at 2 p.m. in the consolation game. The Bears and host Saints will play for the championship at approximately 4:00.
