Scoreless last hour not enough against #18 Marian

GOSHEN, Ind. — For 82 minutes, the Goshen College women's soccer team played a scoreless match against 18th-ranked Marian University on Saturday, but the Knights scored three times in an eight-minute span in the first half to post a 3-0 win at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Courtney Denney scored twice and Mackenzie Hall added a goal and an assist for Marian (7-3-2, 2-1-1). Katie Baer led the Maple Leafs (4-5-2, 0-4) with 12 saves.

After kickoff was moved up 30 minutes to 1:30 p.m. due to the weather forecast, Marian opened the match with a first-minute free kick and posted five shots in the first 10 minutes. Baer made her first save in the 8th minute and the Knights opened the scoring after 15:32 on Denney's sliding finish of a Hall assist.

Denney added another score in the 20th minute and Hall got her goal in the 24th. Baer made six more saves over the final 14 minutes to keep the score 3-0 at halftime.

A trio of Maple Leafs — Taliah Borom, Bella Larsen and Lauren Cernak — took shots in the second half, with Cernak's attempt coming the closest to ending the shutout. Marian added another 10 shots and 6 corner kicks over the final three-quarters of an hour.

Brenna Malatestinic made 1 save in goal for Marian. Hall led all players with 6 shots on goal while Denney hit the target a match-high 4 times. Goshen's Carolina Villalobos Palacios led all players with 3 blocked shots.

Notable Numbers:

42: The teams combined to use 42 players in the contest, with 23 Knights and 19 Maple Leafs checking in at some point.

4: The match was one of four Crossroads League women's games with some sort of weather-related change on Saturday: Bethel-Huntington was abandoned in the 60th minute while Grace-Taylor and Indiana Wesleyan-Saint Francis were both delayed before kickoff.

12: Baer has at least eight saves in 12 of her last 15 games. The sophomore entered Saturday with the 10th-best save total in the NAIA.
