Box Score 2 HUNTINGTON, Ind., and SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Elizabeth Breckbill paced the Maple Leafs with 16 kills and Taylor Eash added seven blocks, but back-to-back conference road matches went the wrong way for the Goshen College women's volleyball team over the weekend in a five-set loss at Huntington and a three-set loss at Marian.
Goshen (8-16, 2-10) opened its 24-hour span Friday night with a 25-20 first-set win in the house of the Foresters (9-16, 5-8), using three HU attack errors to spark an early 5-2 run. After Huntington came back to tie the set at every chance between 12 and 17, aces by Naomi Willis and Jennifer Ritchie set up two 3-0 Maple Leaf runs before a Breckbill kill and a Taylor Eash block rounded out the set.
Huntington took the second set 25-15 on the strength of an 11-2 run, then took three of the last four points in the third set behind a pair of Tailor Schultheis blocks for a 25-23 win and a two-sets-to-one lead. Each team hit better than .300 in the third set.
Goshen kept the hitting machine going into the fourth stanza, recording a .364 hitting percentage with 13 kills against a single error in a 25-20 win. Nevertheless, a comeback was required to keep the match alive, with the Maple Leafs trailing 18-15 before reeling off 10 of the last 12 points including the final four in a row. Meghan Manley posted aces for the 23rd and 24th points of the set and Jennifer Ritchie finished things off with a kill.
The Maple Leafs won the first three points of the deciding set and held that lead until just before the midpoint, when Huntington used a 4-0 run to take a 7-6 lead. The teams alternated points until 11-all before a Breckbill block and a Sydney Cruz kill leveled the set again at 13, but Huntington claimed a 15-13 win behind a Schultheis kill and an attack error.
Schultheis and Paige Eakright led all players with 15 kills apiece for Huntington; Lanie McClanahan added 12, one more than Eash's Maple Leaf high. Willis paced the Maple Leafs with 29 assists while Eash added 6 blocks and Breckbill 4.
Saturday had fewer twists and turns for the Knights, who won 25-11, 25-15, 25-14 despite being displaced to The Factory in nearby Speedway by ongoing gym renovations.
Marian won the first four points of the opening set to set the tone, with Hallie Vanitvelt racking up three kills and a block in the stanza for the Maple Leafs. The Knights (20-4, 11-2) again took an early lead in the second period, with Vanitvelt getting two kills early and Breckbill adding a pair of winners late for GC, and MU started the third set on a 6-0 run before finishing from there.
Jennifer Ritchie paced the Maple Leafs with 8 digs and MacKinnon Tracy added 6. Vanitvelt matched Breckbill's team high with 6 spikes in the match and Riley Woods hit .300.
On the Marian side, Kalyn Schreiber put down a match-high 10 kills and Anne Strevels had 8 to go with 7 blocks. Megan Hawley led all players with 16 digs.
