Maple Leafs Open 2018 Women's Volleyball Season With Split

GLENDALE, Wis. — Goshen College opened its 2018 women's volleyball season by splitting two matches Friday at the Cardinal Stritch University Invitational held at Nicolet High School in suburban Milwaukee.

The Maple Leafs (1-1) rebounded from a two-sets-to-one deficit in their opener to top Governors State University in five sets before dropping a three-set decision to Clarke University.

Jennifer Ritchie led all players with 15 kills in the first match, setting a new career high in the process. Elizabeth Breckbill led Goshen with a career-high seven blocks, including two solos, and 13 winners to set career bests in both categories.

Goshen won 40 of the last 60 points in taking the last two sets, firing off 22 kills against four errors in that span. The teams traded 25-23 sets, with GC winning the first stanza and GSU the second, before the Jaguars took the lead with a 25-22 third set win. Goshen claimed a 25-10 fourth set, including 7-2 and 12-4 runs, and trailed just once in a 15-10 deciding-set win.

Ritchie also paced the Maple Leafs with 22 digs while Ally Roehr recorded 27 assists. Meghan Manley and Shelbey Younts posted three aces each. Governors State's Dunja Tatic added 15 winners.

In the second match, Clarke (1-1) never trailed and hit .429, claiming victory by a 25-11, 25-12, 25-13 score. Lindsey Steger and Kasey Davis put down nine kills apiece as the Pride racked up 41 kills against five errors. Alix Talbot added three of the team's 10 aces.

The Maple Leafs used 15 players, getting seven kills from Taylor Eash and four from Haylee Pennington. Ally Roehr led the team with 12 assists and Naomi Willis had eight. Willis and Tessa Clark split the team lead with six digs apiece.

Goshen wraps up the tournament on Saturday, facing Mount Mercy College at 11 a.m. EDT and host Cardinal Stritch at 4 p.m. Both matches will be played at the CSU fieldhouse.
