Best four-set blocking day since 2014 falls short on home floor

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Elizabeth Breckbill racked up seven blocks, one short of her career high, and Hallie Vanitvelt chipped in 12 kills, but a third-set comeback wasn't enough Saturday as Spring Arbor University topped Goshen College in four sets in Crossroads League women's volleyball at Gunden Gymnasium.

The Maple Leafs (7-13, 1-7) used a 5-0 run to pull ahead late in the first set behind kills from Breckbill, Vanitvelt and Sydney Cruz, only to watch the Cougars respond with a five-point run of their own for a 19-17 edge. Alison Ford earned Spring Arbor's last two points of a 25-20 first-set win with back-to-back kills.

Spring Arbor (14-5, 5-4) started the second set with four of the first five points and held on for a 25-20 win, out-killing the Maple Leafs 28-16 through two sets.

While the Cougars matched their match high with 15 kills in the third set, it would be Goshen's turn to jump ahead with a 7-2 opening. Breckbill, Jennifer Ritchie and Madison Coles all had GC blocks in the first nine points. The Maple Leafs never trailed en route to a 25-22 victory earned on the second set point after three straight kills from Taylor Eash.

The fourth set was tied at seven of the first 10 chances, but a pair of Cougar blocks sparked a 7-1 run that put the visitors up 17-13 before another 5-point spurt finished the match with a 25-15 win.

Spring Arbor, which hit at least .125 in each of the four sets, finished with 53 kills on 159 attempts for a .164 percentage. The Maple Leafs finished with 38 winners, but hit above .200 only in their third-set win.

Vanitvelt's 12 kills led all players, but she and Breckbill accounted for more than half of the team's output in that category. Spring Arbor got 11 kills from Claudia Ellis, 24 assists from Annica Stotz and 23 from Hope Notter.

The Maple Leafs finished with 14 blocks to Spring Arbor's 11 and the teams combined for 303 attack attempts.

Notable Numbers:

14: The Maple Leafs recorded their highest block total since a five-set win over Michigan-Dearborn on Aug. 25, 2017. Not since 2014 (an 18-block win over IU Kokomo) have the Maple Leafs stuffed that many attacks in a four-set match.

4: Saturday's win was the fourth straight victory by the road team in the Goshen-SAU series. Each team sent the opponents' home fans home unhappy last fall and Goshen won in Michigan in 2016.

Up Next: Wednesday, Sept. 26  — Bethel at Goshen, 6 p.m.
