Goshen gets back to winning ways, tops Bethel in four

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College women's volleyball team put itself back on the winning side of the ledger Wednesday night with a four-set victory over Bethel College in Gunden Gymnasium.

Elizabeth Breckbill led all players with 11 kills and 5 blocks for the Maple Leafs (8-13, 2-7). Taylor Eash matched that block total, tying her season high for the second straight match, and chipped in 9 kills. Hallie Vanitvelt had 10 winners.

Bethel (5-12, 3-7) got the first lead of the match as Goshen was whistled for a double hit on the opening rally, but the Maple Leafs used a 4-1 run to take the lead and a later 10-2 spurt to break the set open. Breckbill and Haylee Pennington finished the set with a stuff to give GC the 25-18 lead as Bethel finished with more errors than winners.

Goshen picked up where it left off in the second set, at one point using six kills and a Meghan Manley ace in a nine-point span to jump ahead 16-7. Eash and Shelbey Younts combined on a block to give the hosts eight set points before Bethel reeled off five wins in a row; a service error ended that comeback and put GC out front by two sets, 25-20.

The third set was tied at the first five opportunities and again at 11 and 15; twice, Goshen pulled ahead by three points only to be brought back to earth with a pair of Pilot winners. The teams then reversed roles, with a four-point BC run giving the visitors their largest lead of the match at 19-15 and two Eash kills sparking a Maple Leaf comeback to 21-all. Bethel got its first set points on another double hit, but Goshen would save two of the three on a Breckbill kill and a Sydney Cruz block before Kathryn Novy unleashed one of her team-high seven kills to get the Pilots a 25-23 win.

Bethel started the fourth set on a 3-0 run before losing the edge for the last time when two Vanitvelt kills sparked a 6-1 Leaf run to put the hosts up 12-10. Back-to-back aces from Jennifer Ritchie pushed the lead out to 15-12 before Bethel tied things back up at 15, 18, 19 and 20. Goshen took five of the last six points, though, with Breckbill and Cruz wrapping up the 25-21 win with kills.

Notable Numbers:

4: The win was Goshen's first of the season in a match lasting exactly four sets; the team also has a Crossroads League–high four wins in five-set matches, but that set of statistics proved unnecessary Wednesday.

.035: Bethel's hitting percentage was the Pilots' lowest of the season as the Maple Leaf defense forced at least as many errors as kills in the first and fourth sets.

8: Goshen plays its next eight matches away from Gunden Gymnasium as the team has road league contests at Mount Vernon Nazarene, Huntington, Marian and Indiana Wesleyan leading into a four-match event at Indiana Tech on October 12 and 13.

Up Next: Friday, Sept. 28 — Goshen at Mount Vernon Nazarene, 7 p.m.
