Pennington powers, Roehr sets Leafs to Summit City split

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Haylee Pennington paced the Goshen College women's volleyball team with 23 kills in a pair of matches Friday as the Maple Leafs topped Concordia University Ann Arbor and lost to Indiana Tech at the latter school's Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament.

Pennington led all players with 14 winners in Goshen's opening match, a 25-16, 21-25, 26-24, 25-23 win over Concordia. The Maple Leafs (7-17) hit above .300 in both the opening and closing sets, racking up 59 winners against 13 errors. In the second match, Pennington had 9 winners in a 25-21, 25-14, 25-21 defeat.

Jennifer Ritchie added 13 kills in the opener while Elizabeth Breckbill picked up 10 for GC, which was helped by Ally Roehr's 42 assists. Ritchie led all players with 39 service receptions and was one of a quintet of Maple Leafs to reach double figures in digs, where libero Tessa Clark tied a match high with 23.

Madison Coles led the team with 5 of the 9 blocks while Breckbill had the only solo stuff.

Concordia (4-13) got 14 kills from Lena Thompson, 41 assists and 20 digs out of Kaitlin Veihl, and a pair of aces from Gabrielle den Boer. The Cardinals' best hitting set was the third, when they went 18-for-46 with 6 errors for a .261 clip. In that set, the score was tied nine times and the lead changed hands on three occasions: Goshen never trailed in the final stanza.

Breckbill contributed 8 kills and Ritchie 6 in the nightcap, a three-setter that saw the Warriors (16-6) hit .300 as a team. Nine players recorded kills for the home side, led by Jordan Aylward with 9 and Allison Cole with 8.

Roehr registered assists on 24 of Goshen's 30 kills while Clark and Ritchie split the dig duties with 17 and 13 respectively. Taylor Eash finished with a team-high 3 blocks.

Olivia Gessner led Indiana Tech with 4 service aces, beating out three players per team with 1 apiece, and Madeline McDonald added 14 digs. Cole led all players with 5 blocks, all assists.

In the seven-team field, Goshen was one of three schools to finish the tournament's opening day with a 1-1 record, joining Thomas More and Spring Arbor. Indiana Tech and Trinity International each went undefeated.

Goshen returns to the court on Saturday for the final day of the two-day affair, taking on Thomas More at 10 a.m. and Trinity International at approximately noon.
