Late Bethel run keeps Leafs from leveling rivalry score

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Jennifer Ritchie dug up 20 attacks or more for the fifth time this season, but the Goshen College women's volleyball team lost in four sets to Bethel University in four sets at the Wiekamp Center on Friday in Crossroads League action. The final count was 25-11, 15-25, 25-12, 25-20.

Ritchie posted 21 digs to lead the Maple Leafs (7-22, 1-12), who also got 16 from Tessa Clark 14 from Haylee Pennington and 12 from Ally Roehr. Roehr led the team with 28 assists and Pennington added a team-high 9 kills: Pennington and Elizabeth Breckbill added 8 winners each.

Madyson Beaver fired off 11 spikes to pace the Pilots (10-20, 3-10), ahead of 9 kills from Calsey Gruzdov and Payton Hart. Beaver also led her team with 22 assists and added 19 digs, trailing Bridget Downs by four for the match high. Gruzdov, Abby Armold and Kelsey Feddema posted 5 blocks apiece.

The teams traded lopsided wins in the first two sets, with the Pilots going up 14-5 in the first set and Goshen countering with a 14-6 edge in the second. Bethel split open a 4-4 third stanza with runs on the serves of Hannah Dull and Rachel Vendl to take a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was the most topsy-turvy of the match with each team posting at least three runs of three or more points. Goshen opened a 5-3 lead before Bethel retaliated with five straight points, but a pair of Maple Leaf kills closed things back to 11-9 after 20 rallies and 16-14 after 30.

A pair of Gruzdov kills stretched Bethel's margin out to 19-15 and Vendl added an ace to cap a 7-2 run and bring BU within two points of the match. Roehr and Pennington combined to sneak in three more kills before the end of the line, but Bethel went on to wrap up the victory.

The victory gives Bethel a 3-2 lead in the U.S. Highway 20 Cup with 5 of the 15 points in the books. The next head-to-head meetings to count for the new rivalry trophy will be the men's and women's cross country championships on November 9.

Goshen is idle Saturday before returning to Gunden Gymnasium Wednesday night to square off with Saint Francis in its penultimate home match of the season. First serve is set for 6 p.m. leading into a women's basketball game at 8.
