Comeback bid comes up short in 2019 home finale

GOSHEN, Ind. — TaNiece Chapman came up a rebound short of a double-double Wednesday night, but the Goshen College women's basketball team came up on the wrong side of the coin in a 70-65 non-conference loss to Concordia University Ann Arbor in Gunden Gymnasium.

Chapman led the Maple Leafs (6-6) with 17 points), shooting 8-of-14 from the floor to lead Goshen's offense. Keyaira Murff scored a dozen points on 4-of-7 shooting, but it was Graysen Cockerham who led the team with 6 steals and 7 assists in addition to 11 points.

Goshen shot 17-for-23 at the foul line, a 74 percent clip, and outrebounded Concordia 41-26.

The Cardinals (8-4) got a game-high 21 points from Katie Snow, who was 7-for-15 from the floor to go with 9 steals, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, leading the team in all three categories. Tris'styn Williams added 10 points and 5 boards.

Concordia shot 44 percent from the floor, bettering the Maple Leafs by 6 percentage points, and forced 20 turnovers. The Maple Leafs forced 17 turnovers on their defensive end.

The Cardinals led at the end of all four quarters, including 13-12 after one period and 33-31 at the half, but neither team led by more than 5 points until the fourth quarter.

Goshen took a 54-53 lead on two Murff free throws with 6:40 remaining, only to see the Cardinals snatch the advantage back on a Madison Birchmeier 3-pointer 14 seconds later. A miss and a turnover later, Chapman tied the score at 56 at the 5:46 mark.

That was as close as Goshen would get: Concordia scored the next six points and eight of the next 10 to go up 66-58 as Snow sank two foul shots with 3:22 remaining.

Goshen answered with five straight points, buckets from Chapman and Flowers to go with a free throw by Roe, then got two foul shots of its own from Flowers to close within 67-65 with 54.2 seconds left.

After a shot-clock violation on the other end, two looks from the paint did not fall for the Maple Leafs. Snow nabbed the rebound and was fouled, sinking two shots with 18 seconds left and one with 6.8.

Concordia shot 4-of-8 from the floor in the fourth quarter, sealing the win with 9 foul shots in 12 attempts. Goshen forced 5 turnovers against two giveaways, but shot 25 percent from the floor in its comeback bid.

For the game, the Cardinals had a 20-12 edge in points off turnovers but Goshen had a 20-6 margin on points in the paint.

Goshen faces a quick turnaround before its next game, which sees the team wrap up its 2019 home schedule with a game against Indiana University Kokomo on Friday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m., which is a change from the original schedule.
