Match of runs goes to Huntington in five-set epic

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College women's volleyball team won more than half the points and nearly doubled its opponent's hitting percentage, but Huntington University finished the match on a 7-3 run and topped the Maple Leafs in five sets Friday night in Gunden Gymnasium.

The team on the north end celebrated at the end of all five sets, as Huntington took the odd-numbered stanzas 25-22, 10-25, 25-23, 13-25, 15-11.

Madison Coles and Elizabeth Breckbill each had 10 kills and hit above .300 for the Maple Leafs (5-10, 0-3) while Jennifer Ritchie led the team with 12 kills and 23 digs. Breckbill led all players with 5 blocks.

Ally Roehr picked up 34 assists and 17 digs for Goshen: Tessa Clark added 13 digs and Haylee Pennington recorded 11 kills.

The Foresters (7-6, 1-2) routed almost half of their 54 kills through Paige Eakright, who finished with 25 winners and 15 errors on 67 swings. Lindsay Ingenito racked up 12 kills and a .458 hitting percentage while no other Huntington player had more than 6 winners.

HU's libero, Ariene Butler, finished with a match-high 31 digs, followed by Jennings Tacosik with 12, then Eakright and Nicole Flickinger with 10 apiece. Tacosik finished with 43 assists to lead all players.

Huntington led the bulk of the first set, going up 20-16 before a 6-1 Maple Leaf run with two Ritchie kills made it 22-21 the other direction. The Foresters took the next four points to claim the opening stanza, but Goshen went up 7-1 in the second set and never looked back.

HU again opened the third set in front, going up 5-2 before Goshen replied to level the score at 7 and take a 13-10 lead. The Foresters won seven of the next eight rallies to go up 17-14 and held off Goshen for the rest of the set.

With the score reset to 0-0 at the start of the fourth, GC took advantage, winning the first two points and trailing only once the rest of the way. An 8-2 run broke open an 8-8 tie, and runs of 5 points and 4 points wrapped up the set win to level the match.

Unfortunately, the momentum would not carry into the final set as Huntington got two kills from Eakright and two Elaine Bredensteiner kills to open a 5-1 lead. The Maple Leafs got three straight Breckbill winners to tie the set at 8, but Brandy Michie was in on two kills and a block as Huntington answered with 4 points in a row.

Despite the defeat, Goshen won 106 points to Huntington's 88 and hit .237 to the Foresters' .128.

The loss dropped Goshen to 3-5 in program history on Friday the 13th and 1-2 this season on the same day as a full moon.

The Maple Leafs continue their string of three home matches in five days on Saturday when they host Grace College in the first half of their second-closest rivalry of the season. First serve is set for 3 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium.
