Third-set comeback fizzles in fourth against Grace

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Taylor Eash racked up 5 blocks, 9 kills and a .250 hitting percentage Saturday, but the Goshen College women's volleyball team lost the battle of the Crossroads League's two GCs to Grace College in four sets at Gunden Gymnasium. Grace won by a final score of 25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-14.

Jennifer Ritchie paced the Maple Leafs (5-11, 0-4) with 11 kills and hit double figures with 16 digs, though Ally Roehr would lead the team with 22 in the latter category. Roehr also chipped in 3 kills and 37 assists, helping out in some form on 40 of her team's 44 kills.

Tessa Clark added 12 digs from the libero spot and Olivia Koop and Elizabeth Breckbill each contributed 4 blocks. Breckbill finished with 7 kills and Koop had 6.

The Lancers (6-9, 2-2) had three hitters and a setter finish with attack efficiencies of .227 or above, paced by Makayla Bell's .321 clip on 12 kills in 28 swings. Katie Swanson led all players with 15 kills.

Grace outblocked Goshen 11-9, getting 6 stops from Makaela Lochmueller and 4 from Bell. Emily Sharp recorded 2 aces. Libero Gina Novotny had a team-high 20 digs, beating out both Sharp and Grace Erwin who had 13 apiece.

Grace led almost wire-to-wire in the first set, with the exception being the first point after an Eash kill. Goshen opened the second set with a 4-0 run and held that lead as late as 16-11 before a Novotny ace and Lochmueller kill highlighted a 6-0 spurt that put the Lancers in front. While Goshen came back to tie the set twice on two Ritchie winners, the damage had been done and Grace did not trail again in the set.

Goshen used a five-point swing to take a 6-2 lead in the third stanza, then got kills from Ritchie and Roehr in a four-point rally to go up 16-11. The Lancers saved three set points to force a Goshen timeout at 24-23, but a service error promptly forced the fourth set.

Unfortunately for the hosts, that momentum did not carry over as Grace won the first point of the fourth set, eventually going up 6-1 and 13-5 for their second straight rivalry win.

The match marked the fourth straight win for the road team in the series between two schools separated by 28 miles along the old Winona Railway train line.

Goshen continues a five-match homestand on Tuesday against Mount Vernon Nazarene University with first serve set for 7 p.m.
