Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Madison Coles' 12 kills and .375 hitting percentage led the Goshen College women's volleyball team in a three-set Crossroads League loss to Bethel University on Friday in Gunden Gymnasium. Despite early Maple Leaf leads in each of the first two sets, the Pilots won 25-22, 25-20, 25-20.
Taylor Eash added 8 winners and Jennifer Ritchie, Olivia Koop and Haylee Pennington each had 6 for the Maple Leafs (5-13, 0-6). Shelbey Younts assisted on 33 of the team's 38 kills and Tessa Clark added 11 digs from the libero spot, though Ritchie led the team with 14.
Haylee Pennington paced Goshen with a pair of aces and a block, tying Coles and Koop in the latter category.
Bethel (7-12, 2-4), which won its second straight match, got 13 kills from Payton Hart and 12 from A.J. McDonald off the bench. Bridget Downs led the team with 11 digs while Madyson Beaver had 10 to go with 35 assists. Beaver and Calsey Gruzdov each recorded solo blocks.
The Maple Leafs, who used just seven players in the loss, mustered a .222 hitting percentage only to watch Bethel post a .308 mark. Gruzdov, Beaver, McDonald and Abby Armold all hit at least .360 for the visitors, who racked up 49 kills to Goshen's 38.
GC led the first set 6-1 and the second 4-0 before Bethel came back to tie both sets at 8 and 12 respectively. The Pilots took four of the final five points in the first set, turning a 21-all tie into a win, and responded in kind with five of the last six points in the second set.
Bethel won the first point of the third set and never trailed by more than 1. A 5-0 run on Beaver's serve opened an 11-6 advantage before Goshen came back with two kills from Coles to tie things at 11. BU answered with six of the next eight points and never trailed again.
Goshen is idle for the rest of the weekend before wrapping up its five-match homestand Wednesday against fourth-ranked Indiana Wesleyan. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium.
