Results mixed in Michigan tri-match

ADRIAN, Mich. — Jennifer Ritchie went off for a team-high 19 kills in a pair of matches Saturday as the Goshen College women's volleyball team found mixed results, edging Siena Heights in five sets before losing to IU South Bend in three at the SHU fieldhouse.

The Maple Leafs (5-8) won their opener 12-25, 25-10, 20-25, 25-15, 16-14 against the Saints before falling 25-13, 25-11, 25-19 against the Titans.

Elizabeth Breckbill and Haylee Pennington each added 11 kills for GC in the opener, which saw the team hit .258 with 49 kills. Siena Heights (2-4) finished with more winners but also double the errors, racking up 28 miscues. Goshen stuffed the Saints at the net six times, with Taylor Eash having a hand in four blocks and Madison Coles in three.

Ritchie paced Goshen with 18 digs, five more than Courtney Trusty and Tessa Clark, while Shelbey Younts accumulated a match-high 4 aces. Ally Roehr assisted on 41 of Goshen's winners and added 2 herself.

Siena Heights got 17 kills and 4 aces from Janel Ruhlman, leading the team in both categories, while Victoria Nerkowski added 10 kills and Grace Polomcak recorded 8. Nerkowski finished with 4 blocks to match the match high.

Karsyn Wolf recorded 17 digs, one short of Ritchie's match high and one of four Saints with at least 12.

IU South Bend (2-5) hit .272 in the nightcap, getting 14 winners from Hannah Marchand and 9 from Robbie Berg in the three-set match. McKenzie Powell led all players with 32 assists while Berg and Madison Burger posted 11 digs each.

Goshen was limited to 19 kills and accumulated 16 errors. Ritchie led the team with 6 winners while Roehr had 15 assists and 3 aces: Clark led all players with a dozen digs.

The Maple Leafs now return to Crossroads League action for their next 10 matches and four weeks, beginning with a visit to Saint Francis in Fort Wayne on Wednesday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in the Hutzell Athletic Center.
