Maple Leafs break late tie, win second straight over Cleary

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Emie Peterson and Beatriz Meneghin each scored to break a halftime deadlock Saturday night in a 2-1 Goshen College victory over Cleary University in women's soccer action at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Peterson opened the scoring just before the hour mark, taking a through ball from Kaitlyn Begley in the defensive half and dribbling toward the goal before firing her first goal of the season past a defenseless goalkeeper.

While Cleary would equalize on a Harley Gorzelski lob shot in the 78th minute, the tie lasted less than three minutes before the Maple Leafs (3-2) scored at the other end. Bella Larsen's cross from the right side found Taliah Borom, who flicked it back to Meneghin at the top of the box for a far-post finish and a game-winning score.

Goshen's Kadie Spoor and Cleary's Kara Donaldson each made four saves off 11 shots: Goshen put 6 attempts on target and Cleary had 5. Meneghin led all players with 3 shot attempts.

Goshen took seven of the match's nine corner kicks and committed 15 fouls to Cleary's 10, but the Cougars (1-2) suffered two of the three yellow cards.

The Maple Leafs are off at midweek before traveling to the University of Rio Grande in southeastern Ohio next Saturday in their penultimate non-conference game of the season. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Evan E. Davis Field.
