Leafs Take Two In Three-Match Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

SOUTH BEND and GARY, Ind. — The Goshen College volleyball team's bid for a perfect weekend was stymied Saturday afternoon when the Maple Leafs dropped a three-set match to Judson University as part of an IU Northwest tri-match.

Friday night, the Maple Leafs overcame a third-set loss to win in four at Indiana University South Bend, and earlier Saturday, Goshen won in three against the hosting RedHawks.

But, as the saying goes, two out of three ain't bad.

FRIDAY: Goshen def. IU South Bend 25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 25-18 (stats)

The Maple Leafs hit .500 in their opening stanza, their second-best single-set hitting percentage of the season, to claim a 25-22 first-set win. Goshen added 12 total blocks, part of an average of eight attack errors per set for the hosting Titans, to pull out the victory.

Lexa Magnuson led Goshen with 13 kills and a .417 hitting percentage and Katy Anspach added 10 kills of her own. The Maple Leafs were done in by nine attack errors in the third set, which allowed IUSB to pull within two sets to one.

Magnuson was credited with seven blocks, one more than the hosts had as a team. Anspach made five, while Natalie Hubby was responsible for four, including three solo stuffs. Kelsey Smith led Goshen with 19 assists.

SATURDAY: Goshen def. IU Northwest 23-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-12 (stats)

The Maple Leafs' 25-10 third-set win, the second-most-lopsided margin by which a set has been decided in Goshen's favor this year, would have ended the match, but IU Northwest had taken the first by a score of 25-23. The RedHawks did not reach 25 points in the final two sets combined.

Lexa Magnuson, Whitney Peterson and Hallie Vanitvelt all registered a team-high 11 kills, with Magnuson chipping in a match-high six blocks and Peterson four. Amanda Colvin had 17 kills for the hosts, leading all players, but Goshen's .390 hitting percentage proved too much to overcome. Goshen finished with only eight attack errors, helped by having none of their attacks successfully blocked.

MacKinnon Tracy added a pair of aces for Goshen along with six digs: Angela Dedering had six digs as well, trailing Danielle Plank's team-high eight.

SATURDAY: Judson def. Goshen 25-19, 25-16, 25-21 (stats)

In the last match of the day, Judson used 16 more kills than the Maple Leafs to power its way to a three-set win. Each team finished with nine total blocks, although five of Goshen's stuffs were solos as opposed to Judson's one. Magnuson and Hubby each made a pair of solo stuffs at the net.

No Goshen player finished with more than six kills, a total accomplished only by Whitney Peterson. Dedering led the team with 11 digs, followed by 10 from Tracy. Smith and Lisa Rodriguez tied for the team lead with 10 assists.

Jennifer Donnell finished with a match-high 11 kills: while she canceled that out with six errors, four other Eagles had hitting percentages of .375 or better.

After raising its record to .500 after the first two wins, Goshen now sits at 11-12. The Maple Leafs are 3-9 in Crossroads League play with six matches remaining: they return to that schedule on Wednesday when Marian University visits Goshen for a 6 p.m. first serve.
