Sloppy Middle Creates Deficit As Leafs Drop Decision to IWU

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — The middle third made the difference Saturday night as the Goshen College women's soccer team lost 3-0 to Indiana Wesleyan University. Not the middle third of the field, per se, though that is usually important, but the middle 30 minutes of the game, when the Wildcats posted all three tallies.

After a scoreless first half-hour, IWU took a 1-0 lead into halftime on an own goal when the cross bounced off the leg of a Goshen defender and into the net. Two insurance goals came 3:35 apart after the break: a 30-yard shot from Susan Anthony in the 48th minute and a goal from the right flank of the penalty area by Alex Abbott in the 51st.

The Wildcats peppered the net with 17 shots: Natalie Thorne made five saves, while Alexis Guillemette stopped all three of Goshen's shots on frame, two of which came from Katelyn Vendrely. IWU took all eight of the match's corner kicks.

Goshen's record falls to 4-9-1 for the season and 0-4-1, good for ninth place, in the Crossroads League. The Wildcats sit in third at 3-1-1, trailing a pair of unbeaten teams, after five conference matches, and are 7-5-1 overall.

Goshen hits the road for its final two away games of the regular season this week. The Maple Leafs visit Grace, which is 10-1-2 this season but fifth in the league, to start that road trip on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Miller Field in Winona Lake.
